Welcome to TobaccoFreeCA.com, an informational and interactive Web site, created for Californians who want information on tobacco cessation and prevention, as well as the support and tools to break the tobacco addiction.

Sponsored by the California Department of Public Health, Tobacco Control Section, TobaccoFreeCA.com furthers the Department's mission to work toward achieving a tobacco-free California, and to reduce illness and premature deaths attributable to tobacco by implementing programs to reduce tobacco use and exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke.

In November 1988, Californians stood up to the well-financed tobacco industry and passed Proposition 99 - the Tobacco Tax Initiative-which increased the state surtax on cigarettes by 25 cents per pack (and an equivalent amount on other tobacco products).

Since then, California has led the way in changing forever how tobacco use and tobacco industry marketing are looked upon by society. Unfortunately, tobacco use remains the number one preventable cause of death in the U.S. More than 4.2 million Californians still smoke and thousands of children become addicted to tobacco every year, and countless others are still exposed to secondhand smoke.

TobaccoFreeCA.com is one more resource for Californians who want and choose to be tobacco-free.
